Insect pheromones

Insect pheromones are widely used in modern pest management. Insects use sex pheromones to communicate for mating. Pheromones elicit strong behavioural reactions at minute amounts, they are species-specific and non-toxic.

Monitoring and detection

Pheromone traps are used to detect harmful insect species in a crop. This information can be used to predict infestations at an early stage and to apply appropriate control measures. In some instances, low trap catches indicate that the population level of a pest is too low to result in an economical damage and that no treatment is needed.

Mating disruption

By permeating the atmosphere with synthetic pheromones, insect olfactory communication and mate-finding can be prevented. The mating disruption technique is replacing conventional insecticides for control of selected insects.
